Stewart First Year Room

The first year room is a self-contained classroom. There are two full time teachers that team-teach in this environment. The environment has been prepared with a diverse set of Montessori based materials. This program is highly individualized. Each child is assessed weekly and given work based on their needs and abilities. Weekly homework assignments include a math packet, a reading book with writing activities, and spelling words. Two book reports are also given during the year.

Mornings are spent listening to group exposures. Each child is exposed to materials, which are based on their ability level. Afternoons are spent doing Independent Study. Students chose works from science, math, reading, and culture. During this time, the teacher functions as a facilitator. The teacher makes sure students are choosing works that appropriately challenge them and their Independent Study time is used wisely.

During Independent Study the teacher observes and records each students growth on a log sheet. The logs are housed in a data folder, which is a portfolio of students’ individual work and scores. Students plot weekly achievements on a graph. This is done so students can take responsibility for their own learning and achievements.
